Quader-Baker panel alleges violation of code of conduct in DUCSU elections

VP (Vice President) candidate Abdul Quader and GS (General Secretary) candidate Abu Baker Majumdar of the Anti-Discrimination Student Union made this allegation at a press conference at Madhur Canteen on Wednesday afternoon.

Abdul Quader said that the Election Commission has announced the code of conduct, but in reality no one is following it. The commission is watching everything, yet special privileges are being given to one party. As a result, all the panels are violating the code of conduct like a competition, while the administration is playing a silent role. VP candidate Abdul Quader said that since August 5, there has been discomfort and fear among the students. He gave an example, ‘If a boy and a girl sit side by side, they are facing moral policing. We got an unprecedented response when we campaigned in the Fine Arts, and the students there told us about their concerns.’

Abdul Quader also questioned the need for deploying the army on the campus during the DUCSU elections. He said, if the Election Commission performs its duties properly in Dhaka University, then there is no need for the army. It would be like ‘using cannons to kill mosquitoes’.

GS candidate from the same panel, Abu Baker Majumder, said, ‘On the last day of filing nominations, the Nationalist Chhatra Dal violated the code of conduct. Yet the administration did not take any action. Now the campus is covered with banners and posters. Even though the university ordered all three to be removed, many did not remove them.’

In response to a question from journalists, Abu Baker said, ‘Tanvir Bari Hamim violated the rules by raising slogans and taking a large number of workers and supporters while collecting nominations and later posting them on social media, violating the code of conduct.’

Earlier, on the occasion of the 49th death anniversary of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, the Anti-Discrimination Students’ Union started its campaign today by placing wreaths at his tomb, offering prayers and supplications. Later, they conducted public relations at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Central Library, Mall Square, VC Square and Halpara.

At that time, VP candidate Abdul Quader went to the students with leaflets and asked for votes. He also highlighted what he would do for them if he becomes VP.
